- Oregon State Library invites you to attend any of four terrific, free luncheon lectures at the State Library. These programs were selected in recognition of Oregon's 150th birthday and focus on unique aspects of Oregon's rich history and culture. Join us in celebrating the Oregon experience. Programs are presented by scholars and experts with a passion for their chosen topic and a wish to share their knowledge with you.

- All lectures are held from 12 pm - 1 pm at the Oregon State Library in Conference room 102/103. The public is invited to attend.

- Community Activity: January 23 & 24 - "Westward" to be presented by the Majestic Theatre <http://www.majestic.org/index.html> . This play tells the story of those who braved the Oregon Trail to open the Far West and establish Oregon as a state. The story is in the words of those who lived the experience. They are the words of the young, the old, the pregnant, the criminals and the visionaries, as they recorded them in their diaries and letters. University of Oregon:
- Event: Premier of “Bowerman, Man of Oregon,” a musical tribute to legendary UO track coach Bill Bowerman
- Date/Time: July 1, 2008, 7:30 p.m.
- Location: Hult Center for the Performing Arts, Eugene
- Information: The Oregon Humanities Center at the University of Oregon commissioned an orchestral piece "Bowerman, Man of Oregon," a musical tribute to legendary UO track coach Bill Bowerman. It will be premiered at the Oregon Bach Festival on July 1. The multimedia gala event will also show the OPB documentary about Bowerman. - Event: First screening of video called “A History of the University of Oregon, 1857-1989”
- Date/Time: May 30, 2008, 5:00 p.m.
- Location: Knight Library at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Room 41
- Organization: University of Oregon Humanities Center (http://www.uoregon.edu/~humanctr/)
- Information: The UO Humanities Center, in collaboration with UO Media Services, has produced a documentary DVD called “A History of the University of Oregon, 1857-1989.” Parts II and III will be screened for the first time on Friday, May 30 at 5 p.m. in 41 Media Services, Knight Library. The DVD will be available for purchase at all Duck Store locations. The event is free and open to the public, and the UO Bookstore will have a booth set up at the premiere to sell copies of the documentary.
- The Department of Art is working with the Lane Historical Society to help document the stories of Native American teachers.
- The Oregon Bach Festival, born out of the UO School of Music, is celebrating some other milestones in 2009 (40th anniversary of the festival; 200th anniversary of Mendelssohn's birth and Haydn's death), which will be linked with OR 150.
- Library exhibits for 2008-2009 will feature Oregon 150 themes
- February 6, 2009: In honor of Oregon's 150th birthday, the Oregon Library Association is encouraging everyone statewide to read one book: "Stubborn Twig" by local author and UO Professor Lauren Kessler. Eugene Public Library and Springfield Public Library will co-host a free talk by Kessler on First Friday at 6:00pm at Eugene Public Library downtown. Books for purchase and signing will be provided courtesy of the University of Oregon Bookstore/Duck Store.
- Sundays, February 15 thru March 29, 2009: Eugene Library's Oregon 150 Series <http://www.eugene-or.gov/portal/server.pt?space=CommunityPage&control=SetCommunity&CommunityID=215> . The UO Museum of Natural and Cultural History is partnering with the Eugene Public Library and the Museums of Springfield/Eugene (MUSE) to bring a series of events focused on celebrating the state's fascinating history and culture. Films, expert speakers and authors will be part of these gatherings, which take place at 2:00pm every Sunday at the Eugene Public Library downtown through March 29. Admission is free, so come and learn more about the great state of Oregon!" First in the series: Oregon 1859: A Snapshot in Time. Get a glimpse of the way Oregon was with an illustrated talk featuring photos and insights into life at the start of statehood. Author Janice Marschner provides an introductory tour of Oregon's Indian history, early Euro-American "settlers," and the era's industries, architecture, transportation, religious groups, and educational institutions.
- May 17-30, 2009: Earth Matters: Edodrama Festival of New Plays <http://www.uoregon.edu/~theatre/08-09/EcoDrama.html> . A ground-breaking new project that includes an international EcoDrama Playwrights Contest, Festival & Symposium on Theatre and Ecology. Join us for ten days of performances, workshops, new play readings, guest speakers, and roundtables about how the art of theatre might help grow a sustainable future.
