1. PSU RECOGNIZED FOR TEACHING
Portland State University has been honored with an award of excellence for its efforts at enhancing undergraduate teaching and learning. The award was presented recently during the annual conference of the American Council on Education.

2. GUBERNATORIAL FORUMS
The Hatfield School of Government at Portland State University will co-sponsor a series of six statewide public forums during which Oregonians will have an opportunity to hear and question the top candidates running to become Oregon’s next governor.

3. DISTANCE DEGREE HONORS
The American Distance Education Consortium has selected Oregon State University’s distance degree program in natural resources as one of the nation’s top distance education programs.

4. EOU UNVEILS ELECTRONIC LIBRARY NET
Eastern Oregon University's Pioneer Library is now the hub of a 10-county electronic information network. The new network allows some 70 schools to share more than 1 million book titles and other library resources.

5. NEW "FOUNDATION" BOOSTS ENGINEERING RESEARCH
Oregon State University is giving its engineering researchers a solid, new foundation for their work. Its 24 feet wide, 68 feet long and 5 feet think with steel-reinforced concrete. The idea is to have a "base" that can support about any kind of engineering research.

6. RESEARCH GRANTS UP 46 PERCENT
Research productivity at the University of Oregon is up 46 percent midway through the 2001-2002 fiscal year. To date, UO researchers have earned more than $43 million in research grants this year.

-- MOST PROMISING MINORITY STUDENT
Christie Wong, a University of Oregon advertising student from Gresham, was recently selected by the American Advertising Federation as one of its 25 most promising minority students in the U.S.

-- STUDENT ENRICHMENT
Don Boderman, who has served as a leadership development coordinator at Western Oregon University, has become the new director of the university’s Student Enrichment Program.

-- HONORS FOR CHEERLEADERS
The Oregon State University cheerleading team has won a series of honors in the United Spirit Association national cheerleading competitions. The honors are the first for the team in school history.

-- HEINZ AWARD
Former MacArthur Fellow Jane Lubchenco, the Wayne and Gladys Valley professor of marine biology at Oregon State University, has been awarded the $250,000 Heinz Award for the Environment. The award is one of only six such awards in the world.

-- ROUNTABLE PRESIDENT
Jim Birken, director of gift planning at Western Oregon University, has been elected president of the Northwest Planned Gift Roundtable for 2002.

-- OUTSTANDING SCIENTIST 2002
Carl Wamser, professor of chemistry at Portland State University, has been selected as the Oregon Academy of Science’s “Outstanding Scientist 2002.” The award is based on accumulated work in research and contributions to science education. Read about the award at:

-- FINANCIAL AID HONORS
The Oregon Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators has honored Patti Brady-Glassman, assistant director of financial aid, and Keith McCreight, retired director at Oregon State University, for their career contributions to students.

-- GOVERNOR LAUDS WORK OF PSU CENTER
Governor John Kitzhaber has commended the work of Portland State University’s National Policy Consensus Center for its work in helping resolve a 10-year dispute between NORPAC Foods, Inc., and PCUN, a farm labor group.
