Space Planning

OUS works to ensure campuses provide and use appropriate building space to maximize educational opportunities in a timely and cost-effective manner. Space utilization directly affects the scope and quality of educational services provided. Ensuring an adequate supply of appropriate classroom space to effectively meet programmatic and enrollment needs provides a better academic experience, and reduces overall educational costs by lowering a student’s “time-to-degree” (how long it takes an average student to earn their degree). Also, buildings consume a significant portion of an institution’s annual operating budget. Inappropriate facilities can increase the consumption of scarce resources and reduce those available for direct program delivery. Decisions to construct or acquire new buildings represent a major, long-term financial commitment and will affect program offerings for a significant period of time. Given the implications, utilizing existing space as intelligently and practically as possible helps make higher education more affordable to both students and campus operations.
