Governor appoints, Senate approves OSU student, Farbodd Ganjifard, as new member of State Board of Higher Education

PORTLAND, June 13, 2011 –

Farbodd Ganjifard, a student leader at Oregon State University, was appointed by Governor Kitzhaber earlier this month, and confirmed by the Oregon Senate last week, to serve on the Oregon State Board of Higher Education (the “Board”). Ganjifard replaces Brian Fox, a student board member who served from February 2008 through June 2011.

Ganjifard, a senior at OSU and a Cultural Anthropology major, will begin his term on the Board on July 1 and will serve as a director through June 2013. The 12-member volunteer Board includes representation from two Oregon University System students, two OUS faculty members, and eight members of the public.

Paul Kelly, president of the Board of Higher Education, said, “We are very pleased that Farbodd will be joining the Board as another strong voice for Oregonians and for students pursuing higher education at one of the OUS campuses. That student voice in the guidance of our public university system is essential to the pursuit of the Board’s mission. Farbodd has been a very active and engaged advocate for students not only at Oregon State but also statewide and nationally, and we look forward to serving with him as a colleague on the Board.”

Ganjifard has been a member of Associated Students of OSU and served as executive director of campaign resources where he planned, implemented, and assisted with outreach, trainings, and campaigns. He currently serves as co-chair of the Oregon Students of Color Coalition where he advocates for access to equitable education by empowering students and strengthening communities of color; and he is a member of the United States Student Association Board of Directors where he represents students of Middle Eastern and South Asian descent, and aids the organization overall in their student advocacy work. Ganjifard also served as president of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity at OSU in 2010.

Ganjifard is a 2007 graduate of Lake Oswego High School, and currently resides in Corvallis, Oregon.

The Oregon University System comprises seven distinguished public universities and one branch campus, reaching more than one million people each year through on-campus classes, statewide public services and lifelong learning. The Oregon State Board of Higher Education, the statutory governing board of OUS, is composed of twelve members appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Oregon State Senate.
