Dr. Antone (Tony) C. Van Vliet, Corvallis, was appointed to the Oregon State Board of Higher Education in August 2004. He is a retired Professor Emeritus of Forestry and Director of the Career Planning and Placement Center. He was the recipient of the Mosser and Aufderheide Teaching Awards during his 35 years at Oregon State University. He was also the state’s first Forest Products Extension Specialist, a position he held for seven years.

From 1975 to 1995, Van Vliet served as State Representative from Corvallis.

He served on the Revenue Committee for two sessions before spending the next 16 years on the Ways and Means Committee and the Emergency Board.

Except for being Co-Chair in 1991, he spent almost all those years on the Education and Human Resource sub-committees, which represented over 75% of the General Fund budget. He served eight years on the state’s Environmental Quality Commission.

Van Vliet has been a consultant to many forest companies specializing in management and manufacturing problems as well as wood science and engineering.

He currently is Chairman of the Board of Directors, Oregon Public Broadcasting; Chairman of the Riverfront Commission in Corvallis; and was a founding member of the Corvallis Public Schools Foundation.

Dr. Van Vliet received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Forest Products from Oregon State University and his Ph.D. in Forestry from Michigan State University.

His term expires in 2009.

Committees: Finance and Administration Committee, Oversight Committee on Sexual Assault (Chair), Joint Boards' Working Group, Joint Boards' Unified Education Enterprise, and was elected vice president of the Board for 2008-09.
